Can Your Donor Area Stretch Safely?
A lot of hair transplant patients assume that if the donor area has enough hair, surgery can simply move forward. But donor density is only one part of the story. The back of the scalp must also stretch safely.
In this video, the doctor gives a strong
warning: if a patient with poor scalp elasticity undergoes overly aggressive
strip harvesting, the results can be disastrous. Excessive tension may cause
severe postoperative discomfort, bleeding, inflammation, visible scarring, and
in the worst situations, tissue necrosis.
That is why donor elasticity is not just a
technical issue for surgeons. It is a patient safety issue.
The good news is that there is a simple
self-check anyone can try at home. Firmly press the back of the head and move
the scalp up and down. If the scalp shifts well, mobility may be relatively
good. If it barely moves, that may be a sign that expert evaluation is needed
before planning strip surgery.
The doctor also points out that many people
misunderstand the word “tight.”
A scalp may feel firm, but what matters clinically is how well the upper layers
glide and how much elastic give they have. These factors influence how much
tissue can be removed and how well the wound may heal afterward.
So if you are considering a strip procedure, do not focus only on the promise of more grafts. A safer question is whether your scalp can tolerate the procedure well. The smartest transplant plan is not the most aggressive one. It is the one that respects the biology of your donor area. Source
